Our “Mark of Everlasting Infamy”

Ronald Reagan once said :

“Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it on to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.”

Those words are more prophetic every day. It now seems that a majority of people are willing to sacrifice their basic freedoms to an all powerful government with no thought of the consequence. When our liberty is gone, it will be nearly impossible to regain. We already see that our government has no problems training it’s watchful eye on its citizens. From onerous regulation to electronic eavesdropping to being monitored by drones, the government reach knows no bounds. I suspect that the scope of “black op” government spying goes well beyond what has been made public. Where is the outrage? Is everyone too absorbed with mindless tv, their electronic gadgets, and social media to even care? Clearly, the establishment of both ruling political parties has been compromised. The promise of power and riches has corrupted our leaders, making them traitors to Liberty. The ruling class strives to empower itself as they push us into equalized tyranny, everyone serving and depending on the government for our daily needs while sharing the crumbs they throw us.
To make a pop culture reference, I equate our situation to the “Star Wars” movies. In the movies, we can see the cloak of evil descending on the Republic; the manipulations of Palpatine, the build up of secret government forces, the purging of good men, replaced with evil, ambitious lackeys. We can see the darkness approaching that will send the galaxy into tyranny. The same thing is happening to us in real life. The people, out of fear and sloth, turn to the government for protection and sustenance, sacrificing their freedom for a supposed worry free existence. Only in real life, we don’t have the ominous background music that plays every time another piece of evil’s plan falls into place. But falling into place it is , nonetheless.

In another prophetic quote, the great Samuel Adams said

“The liberties of our country, the freedoms of our civil Constitution are worth defending at all hazards; it is our duty to defend them against all attacks. We have received them as a fair inheritance from our worthy ancestors. They purchased them for us with toil and danger and expense of treasure and blood. It will bring a mark of everlasting infamy on the present generation – enlightened as it is – if we should suffer them to be wrested from us by violence without a struggle, or to be cheated out of them by the artifices of designing men.”

Are we the enlightened generation that receives the mark of infamy?

  1. It is so easy to sit back and forget the ramifications of what transpires in our government. It makes me sick to watch what is happening, and I am often lured into complacency, it is so much easier. Yet, I awake to the realization that if I don’t remain vigilante for my kids, the world will deal them a poor hand. I must, you must, we all must remain engaged in the fight to keep liberty.
